Former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton has once again raised concerns about former President Donald Trump’s understanding of NATO. In a recent statement, Bolton asserted that Trump had a limited grasp of the alliance’s purpose.
During the interview, former adviser John Bolton said that he thinks Donald Trump simply doesn’t understand what NATO is—whether it’s a collective defense alliance or even a bilateral alliance like the ones we have with Japan or South Korea. His basic view is simple-minded—he believes we’re defending Europe, we don’t get anything out of it, and the Europeans don’t pay. However, very little of that happens to be true. It’s not just a European defense organization; it’s a North Atlantic organization, and we do get a lot out of it.
